Investigation 1: Pushing the Envelope

This lesson was especially difficult for my students. Most students do not send letters and are not familiar with postal procedures. I found I had to spend time filling in the background knowledge so they could make simple inferences. For instance; two stamps are needed for heavier mail; postmarks tell us which post office the mail was sent from; the address on the top left corner is from the sender, but does not always indicate the address the letter was sent from...
As we moved through the lesson, more students began to understand observations, but we still need to work on basing inferences on particular observations as opposed to making general guesses.

  1. In today's digital age, students have no need for letters. Bills are paid electronically, cellphones are able to send messages/pictures/ sounds/and make calls. There seems to be less and less need for letters. I find it interesting, but realistic, that year after year, students have no conceptin of letters.
Thanks for the post. It was thought provoking. I'll bring this up with the specialists as well.
